Is it possible to learn Yoga from a book?
I am looking for a simple book to start learning about Yoga and have been told this book(http://www.giftsmill.com/yoga-for-dummies-paperback-english) is quite good. Is it possible to learn Yoga from a book? I don’t have much time to go to a class after work and would like to do some exercise in the privacy of my home using easy to follow instructions. I have used a DVD before but have found the instructions hard to follow and am hoping a book might be easier.
There’s no reason you can’t learn basic positions and even more from a book, I learn a lot from books. I found a meditation book at used book store, and meditation is part of yoga. Although it appears to be a religious book, it’s mostly about how philosophical principles can be used to increase self awareness. I don’t have a good yoga book (my Mom did but can’t remember the name), I just have one of those yoga dvd’s too.

…no kidding nodumgys, if I want someone’s tail in my face my cat is always glad to oblige, and I don’t really want strangers checking out my downward facing dog either.

Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown; A Mountain Journal $14.95 These ruminations, assembled in the form of a journal and here published in paperback for the first time, were written at Alan Watts’ retreat in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais, California. Many current themes are discussed, including meditation, nature, established religion, race relations, karma and reincarnation, astrology and tantric yoga, and the nature of ecstasy, but the underlying motif is the art of feeling out and following the watercourse way of nature, known in Chinese as the Tao. Watts suggests a way of contemplative meditation in which we temporarily stop naming and classifying all that we experience, and simply feel it as it is. |

The Essential Yoga Sutra $13 The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali is a classic Sanskrit treatise consisting of 195 threads, or aphorisms, describing the process of liberation through yoga. Although little is known about Patanjali (most scholars estimate that he lived in India circa 200-300 b.c.), his writings have long been recognized as a vital contribution to the philosophy and practice of yoga. This new, expert translation of the original Sanskrit text of Patanjali’s best-known work presents his seminal ideas and methods in accessible, plain-language English. Patanjali organized the sutra into four parts: Samadhi (absorption), Sadhana (practice), Vibhuti (supernatural powers), and Kaivalya (liberation). Each represents a step in breaking free of our limited definition of consciousness and training the mind to achieve oneness with the universe. Geshe Michael Roach, one of the most respected teachers of Tibetan Buddhism in America and a renowned scholar of Sanskrit, provides authoritative commentary on each of the sutras. His notes and clarification are straightforward and highly readable, untainted by obscure, academic terminology or New Age jargon. The first edition of the Yoga Sutra to present a Buddhist perspective, this paperback original will be welcomed by students and spiritual seekers alike. |
