Western Wear History
You don’t have to look to far to find out the origins of western apparel, whether you listen to tales of the wild west, watching those old cowboy films or listening to the stars of country music.
Western wear derives its name from a unique style of the clothes worn by men and women in the 19th-century American West. It has undergone many changes since the early days of the Wild West with its open ranges, wagon trains, cattle drives, and notorious outlaws. The apparel worn by legends of the west such as Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, and Wild Bill Hickock is decidedly different from most of today’s western fashions, but it was this era that laid the foundations to the western fashion we know and wear today. The cowboy way was a way of life throughout the American west up until the early 1900s.
Western apparel got started along with those who were known as cowboys after the American Civil War. Ranchers in Texas had to find a market for their large excess stock of cattle. Meanwhile, on the east coast beef was in short supply. Thus, the ranchers drove their cattle north to the nearest railroads, for example Fort Worth, which became a major shipping point for livestock in 1876. This prompted plans in 1887 for the construction of the Union Stockyards about two and one half miles north of the Tarrant County Courthouse. It went into full operation about 1889.
Mexican vaqueros and Americans fleeing the law also made up a large number of cowboys roaming the untamed west. The attire of these early cowboys was usually very plain and simple. Full length trousers made of canvas were tucked inside their cowboy boots, allowing them to ride several rough trails before their jeans wore out. Shirts of the early cowboy were usually cotton or wool, sometimes with simple pin striping, and had no collar. These shirts pulled over their heads with buttons running only partially down the front of the shirt. A bandana was worn to protect the neck of the cowboy from the elements while riding the trail, which was also used as a mask in dust storms as well as outlaws using them as a mask during bank raids and hold ups. A cowboy’s hat was very practical and used for everything from protecting them from the sun, to providing them with something to drink out of when fresh water could be found. This is how, allegedly, the name the “Ten Gallon Hat” was born because of its ability to hold water.
The early days of Hollywood revived the old west spirit, the cowboy way of life, and sparked new interest in western wear across the nation. Gene Autry, John Wayne, and Roy Rogers lit up cinema screens and those of a certain generation will never forget our television screens filled popular western series such as Rawhide with Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood), Gunsmoke with Dennis Weaver as Chester and Bonanza with Little Joe (Michael Landon) all dressed in western apparel.
Western wear became prominent in pop culture during the 1960’s with even the Beatles wearing cowboy boots. Western apparel popularised by this era included cowboy hats, fashionable cowboy boots and jeans, as well as collared shirts featuring designs and patterns.
Some of most articulate western wear is the custom work created by rodeo tailors such as Nudie Cohn and Manuel, which is characterised by elaborate embroidery and rhinestone decoration. This type of western wear, popularised by country music performers, is the origin of the phrase rhinestone cowboy.
Nashville’s country music scene with has kept up the interest in the western fashion industry and the western way of life, and its artists, with such country stars as Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw and Dwight Yokam all sporting cowboy hats, cowboy boots and clothing’ have heavily influenced the western wear of today. Sand-blasted jeans, distressed leather, and ultra-casual dress have become the frontier in modern western apparel; which has become popular with line dancing, western riding, and western fashion together with country music fans all over the world. Classic western wear is still commonplace in American culture.
Some western companies focus on maintaining cowboy authenticity in their events, to support re-enactments, staged events, film and theatre. Western wear ranges from accurate historical reproductions of pioneer, mountain man, Civil War, cowboy and Mexican vaquero clothing to the stylised garments for the show business world.

1966 Texas Western Vs Kentucky $9.04 On March 19, 1966, Texas Western College, now known as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), put an all-black starting five on the floor for the first time in an NCAA basketball championship. Lattin set the tone early with a thunderous dunk, highlighting the strength of the Miners, while Hill?s back to back steals showed their quickness. American Experience Annie Oakley $19.99 In 1926, just a few months before her death, Will Rogers described Annie Oakley as the greatest woman rifle shot the world has ever produced. As the star attraction of Buffalo Bill s Wild West Show, she thrilled audiences around the world with her daring shooting feats and her act helped fuel turn-of-the-century nostalgia for the vanished, mythical world of the American West. Over time she became an American legend–the loud, brassy, cocksure shooter celebrated in the musical Annie Get Your Gun. But that legend had little to do with the real Annie Oakley. Although famous as a Western sharpshooter, Oakley lived her entire life east of the Mississippi. A champion in a man s sport, she forever changed ideas about the abilities of women, yet she opposed female suffrage. Her fame and fortune came from her skill with guns, yet she was a Quaker. This probing AMERICAN EXPERIENCE production examines the dramatic life of a uniquely American icon whose complex character manifested many of the paradoxes of the nation.System Requirements:Running Time 60 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE |

Asleep At the Wheel-Live At Billy Bobs $7.98 Ray Benson (Ray Benson Siefert, born March 16, 1951), Lucky Oceans and Leroy Preston were really just three alterna-culture refugees when they landed in Paw Paw, W. Va., in the summer of 1969. Their plan was to form a real live Western swing band influenced by the likes of fellow-gonzo-swinger Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. After drifting through Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, the band (which got its record deal when Van Morrison raved about them in Rolling Stone) landed in the heart of Bob Wills country: Austin, Texas, in the early ’70s. With its fondness for jazz, blues, rock and country, the band was an instant hit with the same folks who embraced Willie Nelson and the rest of the Outlaws. The band only scored one Top 10 country hit — 1975′s The Letter That Johnny Walker Read — but has collected eight Grammys since then. In addition to two-all star Bob Wills tributes in the ’90s, the ensemble offered a concept album Asleep at the Wheel Remembers the Alamo in 2003. Also that year, Benson (the only remaining founding member) released his first solo album, Beyond Time, which earned two Grammy nominations. |

Gene Autry, star of radio, records, film, TV and rodeo, invented the musical Western, capturing America’s hearts as a guitar-slinging, song-singing, six gun-toting good guy. Riding Champion, the World’s Wonder Horse, Autry became a beloved American hero whose popularity remains strong today. Now, for the first time on DVD, Gene Autry’s rollicking big screen adventures and unforgettable tunes are brought home in these Western classics fully restored and uncut from Autry’s personal film archives. The feud between two rival rodeo companies accelerates when both want Autry as a crowd-drawing added attraction. This Autry’s last movie he filmed before serving in World War II. Gene sings five hit songs, including In Old Capistrano and Forgive Me. Heart of the Rio GrandeRanch foreman Gene Autry tames a spoiled teenage shrew sent to Smoke River Dude Ranch for the summer and in the process humanizes her father into becoming a better parent. Belle Starr $19.95 Legendary comrade and consort to train robbers, bootleggers, stagecoach robbers, bush-whackers, bank robbers, horse thieves, cattle thieves, and outlaws of all stripes, Belle Star (1848-89) was born in Missouri and emigrated with her family to Texas in 1863. Myth made her a dancehall entertainer, faro dealer, expert horsewoman, crack shot, and adopted member of the Cherokee nation. Was her first love Cole Younger, a cousin and associate of Jesse James, and did she bear his child in 1869? And when she settled at Younger’s Bend on the Canadian River in Indian Territory, did she really establish a haven for desperadoes, mastermind a string of criminal enterprises, and entertain a series of lovers, all of whom met with violent ends? Did the dime novelist invent her flamboyant dress, musical abilities, literary tastes, colorful language, and determined refusal to occupy a woman’s place ? Or was she an original free spirit whose force of personality and violation of all normal standards of conduct made her the perfect antiheroine of the Western frontier? Burton Rascoe’s classic biography separates the facts from the folklore and traces the sources and afterlives of the fictional accounts published after her mysterious and unsolved murder. Glenda Riley’s introduction adds new evidence to help get behind the layers of oral history, hyperbole, and outright lies. |

Biedermann Sons C1609A Soccer Theme Birthday Candles $29.14 More than 800 years ago the village of Schwaebisch Gmuend was founded by the Kings of Staufen who were responsible for settling this region known for its artisans specializing in the production of gold silver and brass jewelry as well as decorative ornaments. These works of art were shipped to markets in Italy and Western Europe. The tradition in metal arts survives today in this medieval walled town located near Stuttgart Germany. For generations families have engaged in ornament cutting designing their own unique decorations to give friends and relatives as gifts during the holiday season. The Biedermanns originated the creation of a single Christmas ornament commemorating each year drawing on the talent from this region. In the fall of 1970 we contacted several artisan families who among them designed and cut the first ornament which depicted the town square of Schwaebisch Gmuend. Since that first edition each year a group of artists has selected a single design from those submitted by the townspeople and the ornament to be cut for the coming season is chosen. This is now a tradition that the people of Schwaebisch Gmuend and America cherish. Designs through the years have been selected from those created by school children and adults. Our Master Cutter Georg Neumaier directs the production of the Biedermann Commemorative Ornament and is also involved in selecting the years winning design. The now very valuable original brass ornament was supplemented in 1984 by our first edition silver-plated ornament. Beginning in 1987 alternate years depict the story of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Nineteen ninety-eight began the first edition of the Christmas Quotations Series of ornaments. We take pride in offering the Biedermann Commemorative Ornaments to you the collector and to all connoisseurs of tasteful high quality craftsmanship. Canadian Pacific Railway $130.79 Most North American railroads began their lives as local or regional enterprises, growing larger through acquisition and construction. By contrast, Canadian Pacific Railway was conceived as a transcontinental railroad from the beginning. CPR has not only provided transportation; it has given tangible expression to the political, economic, and social connections between Canada’s eastern and western provinces. In this marvelously illustrated history, author Tom Murray provides readers with an engaging look at the railroad whose own history is, in many ways, the history of Canada itself. In addition to examining the prehistory leading to CPR’s incorporation in 1881 and its current status as one of the continent’s leading carriers, Murray explains the colossal geographic obstacles overcome by CPR’s founders; motive power and rolling stock through depression, war, and peacetime; renowned diversification efforts that included a passenger ship line, an airline serving four continents, a chain of four-star hotels, and western mining operations; and the colorful cast of characters who laid the groundwork that made CPR what is today. Marvelous photography carefully chosen from the collections of top rail photographers and archives across Canada and the United States illustrate the national icon that began as a railway, became a global transportation system, and evolved into a diversified industrial conglomerate before settling into its role as the respected carrier it is today. |

Chisum $7.33 Summer jobs were scarce and the greenhorn prop boy aimed to keep his. Thinking a scene was over, he stepped into the set to sweep up, walking into view of the rolling camera–and right into a stream of invective from director John Ford. This encounter set in motion events that would transform movie crewman Marion Morrison into future legend John Wayne. Chisum showcases Wayne in the twilight of his remarkable 200+ film career. As John Chisum, a real-life cattle king determined to protect his empire against a land-grabbing developer (Forrest Tucker), Wayne’s no-nonsense persona snugly fits this re-working of New Mexico’s 1878 Lincoln County War. Directed in fine sagebrush style by Andrew V. McLaglen and beautifully photographed by William H. Clothier (The Warner Bros. Story)..Chisum is the kind of epic, brawling Western that made Wayne endure as a star. |
