Unabridged. From the Publisher: Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace…only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction. A Feast for Crows It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears….With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King s Landing. Robb Stark s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist–or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out. But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces–some familiar, others only just appearing–are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead. It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the |

Bait And Switch $1.01 From the Publisher: Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed explored the lives of low-wage workers. Now, in Bait and Switch, she enters another hidden realm of the economy: the shadowy world of the white-collar unemployed. Armed with a plausible r sum of a professional in transition, she attempts to land a middle-class job undergoing career coaching and personality testing, then trawling a series of EST-like boot camps, job fairs, networking events, and evangelical job-search ministries. She gets an image makeover, works to project a winning attitude, yet is proselytized, scammed, lectured, and again and again rejected. Bait and Switch highlights the people who’ve done everything right gotten college degrees, developed marketable skills, and built up impressive r sum s yet have become repeatedly vulnerable to financial disaster, and not simply due to the vagaries of the business cycle. Today’s ultra-lean corporations take pride in shedding their surplus employees plunging them, for months or years at a stretch, into the twilight zone of white-collar unemployment, where job searching becomes a full-time job in itself. As Ehrenreich discovers, there are few social supports for these newly disposable workers and little security even for those who have jobs. Like the now classic Nickel and Dimed, Bait and Switch is alternately hilarious and tragic, a searing expos of economic cruelty where we least expect it. |

Capital Affairs $40 During the 1950s a series of spectacular scandals profoundly disturbed London life in ways that had major national consequences. High and low society collided in a city of social and sexual extremes. Patrician men-about-town, young independent women, go-ahead entrepreneurs, Westminster politicians, queer men and West-Indian newcomers played aconspicuous part in dramatic encounters that signalled a new phase of post-Victorian sexual morality. These dramas of pleasure and danger occurred not only in the glamorous and shady entertainment spaces of the West End but also in Whitehall, as well as the twilight zones of the inner city. Frank Mort uncovers the ways in which they transformed national culture. Soho and Notting Hill became beacons for anxieties over the changing character of sex in the city and the cultural impact of decolonisation. The old European migrants and the new Caribbean presence were significant factors in the readjustment of urban sexual mores. |

Crossroads of Twilight $29.95 In the tenth book of The Wheel of Time series from the New York Times No. 1 bestselling author Robert Jordan, the world and the characters stand at a crossroads, and the world approaches twilight, when the power of the Shadow grows stronger. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn himself, has cleansed the Dark One’s taint from the male half of the True Source, and everything has changed. Yet nothing has, for only men who can channel believe that saidin is clean again, and a man who can channel is still hated and feared-even one prophesied to save the world. Now Rand must gamble again, with himself at stake, and he cannot be sure which of his allies are really enemies. Chapter One The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Rhannon Hills. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning. Born among the groves and vineyards that covered much of the rugged hills, the olive trees in evergreen rows, the ordered vines leafless till spring, the cold wind blew west and north across the prosperous farms dotting the land between the hills and the great harbor of Ebou Dar. The land lay winter fallow still, but men and women were already oiling plowshares and tending harness, preparing for the planting to come. They paid little mind to the trains of heavily laden wagons moving east along the dirt roads carrying people who wore odd clothes and spoke with odd accents. Many of the strangers seemed to be farmers themselves, familiar implements lashed to their wagon boxes, and in their wagons unfamiliar saplings with roots balled in rough cloth, but they were heading on toward more distant land. Nothing to do |

Early Articles and Reviews $50 The Collected Works of W. B. Yeats, Volume IX: Early Articles and Reviews is part of a fourteen-volume series under the general editorship of eminent Yeats scholars Richard J. Finneran and George Mills Harper. This first complete edition includes virtually all of the Nobel laureate’s published work, in authoritative texts with extensive explanatory notes.Coedited by John P. Frayne and Madeleine Marchaterre, Early Articles and Reviews assembles the earliest examples of Yeats’s critical prose, from 1886 to the end of the century — articles and reviews that were not collected into book form by the poet himself. Gathered together now, they show the earliest development of Yeats’s ideas on poetry, the role of literature, Irish literature, the formation of an Irish national theater, and the occult, as well as Yeats’s interaction with his contemporary writers. As seen here, Yeats’s vigorous activity as magazine critic and propagandist for the Irish literary cause belies the popular picture created by his poetry of the Celtic Twilight period, that of an idealistic dreamer in flight from the harsh realities of the practical world. This new volume adds four years’ worth of Yeats’s writings not included in a previous (1970) edition of his early articles and reviews. It also greatly expands the background notes and textual notes, bringing this compilation up to date with the busy world of Yeats scholarship over the last three decades. Early Articles and Reviews is an essential sourcebook illuminating Yeat’s reading, his influences, and his literary opinions about other poets and writers. |

Hollywood Vs. the Aliens $7.14 The collusion of government and the entertainment industry, from the ’30s to the present– Scrutinizes the depiction of aliens from War of the Worlds to Independence DayThe line between fact and fantasy, fear and fun, has always been a thin one in Hollywood films. Now it becomes even more blurred in Hollywood vs. the Aliens. Film historian Bruce Rux posits that the film industry has long collaborated with a government disinformation campaign about UFOs, shaping and controlling popular knowledge about documented UFO activity. The book uncovers the conspiracy roots of government involvement in science fiction/horror movies, from pulp-fiction and Lost World romances to films dealing with flying saucers, the planet Mars, mind control, and extraterrestrials.Written in a mock-serious tone reminiscent of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone TV series, and illustrated with old movie stills, Hollywood vs. the Aliens is a fascinating, fun read, yet delivers some startling findings. In the first part, The Real Thing , Rux reviews the facts known about UFOs and ancient technologies, and how they came to be discovered. The second part, The Reel Thing , investigates the period between the 1930s and 1950s, focusing on the CIA’s Robertson Panel’s recommendation that Hollywood be used as a deflectionary tool against popular interest in UFOs. Government involvement in Orson Welles’s 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast is discussed, as are the Disney and United Artists studios’ early connections to patriotic propaganda. Early ’50s movies like The Thing from Another World and The Day the Earth Stood Still show UFOlogical facts that only government sources could have known about at the time. The book thengoes on to discuss recent releases and the ongoing depiction of aliens and UFOs. |

Isaac Bashevis Singer and the Lower East Side $26.95 Isaac Bashevis Singer, the Polish-born Yiddish writer and Nobel laureate, and New York documentary photographer Bruce Davidson collaborated on a surreal feature film made in 1973, entitled Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Nightmare and Mrs. Pupko’s Beard. This film was at once a documentary about Singer’s New York and a dramatization of one his short stories. The film grew out of their friendship, as residents of the same building on the upper West Side of Manhattan, and their common interest in New York City street life. During and after production, Davidson made numerous portraits of Singer and also returned to the Lower East Side for a documentary series of photographs. A selection of more than forty of the stunning images made between 1957 and 1990 is available here for the first time in Isaac Bashevis Singer and the Lower East Side: Photographs by Bruce Davidson. The book also includes portraits of Singer, stills from the film, the black and white portfolio known as The Garden Cafeteria, and selections from the Lower East Side series. The Garden Cafeteria was a collaboration depicting denizens of the East Broadway restaurant frequented by Singer during his trips to The Jewish Daily Forward. The portfolio has never been published nor exhibited in its entirety–until this volume. Included is an introduction by Singer himself on Davidson’s images, an in-depth interview with Davidson about his art, aesthetic and political views, and his Jewishness, and a reflective, contextual essay by Ilan Stavans on the relevance of this collaboration between the writer and the photographer. Through Davidson’s lens we see Singer’s literary world of Holocaust survivors and emigres from EasternEurope–a displaced culture in its twilight. This book is a co-publication and appears in conjunction with an exhibition organized and presented by the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, on the occasion of the centennial celebration nationwide of Singer’s birth in 2004. |
