What is your favorite Alan Moore comic, other than WATCHMEN?
Mine was “Batman:The Killing Joke”
Killing Joke seems to be the only comic I have by him, but it’s not my favorite Joker origin. However, most of the girls in my Batman Comic Club for Girls absolutely addore it.

Dame Darcy’s Meatcake Compilation $188.38 Victorian Humor, Horror, and Romance From a Unique Comics Stylist. One of the most beguiling presences on the comics scene, Dame Darcy–musician, actress, cable TV star, fortune teller, dollmaker, and last but not least, cartoonist to the core–has been bewitching readers for over ten years with her neo-Victorian horror/humor/romance comic Meatcake. Alternating between one-off (often cruelly tragic) fairy tales and ongoing romps starring her eclectic cast of characters, including Effluvia the Mermaid, the roguish roue Wax Wolf, Igpay the Pig-Latin pig, Stregapez (a women who speaks by dispensing pez-like tablets through a bloody hole in her throat), the mischievous Siamese twins Hindrance and Perfidia, Scampi the Selfish Shellfish, the stalwart Friend the Girl, and the blonde bombshell Richard Dirt, all delineated in her inimitable luxurious scrawl, Meatcake is like a peek into the most creative, deranged dollhouse you ever saw. Dame Darcy’s Meatcake Compilation assembles, in clothbound luxury the very best from the first decade of Meatcake (including Hungry is the Heart, the legendary collaboration with Watchmen’s Alan Moore, a big Darcy fan who has worked with her on his ABC comics)–almost 200 pages of wild and woolly comics. Darcy’s fans include many of her fellow cartoonists, and such similarly flamboyant personalities as Courtney Love (who once memorably guested on Darcy’s cable TV show Turn of the Century). She also has a huge following in the Goth community, who enjoy her wickedly ghoulish sense of humor and retro art style. |

Sticks and Stones $6.38 In a barren landscape, an empire is about to rise and an epic struggle is about to unfold. Sticks and Stones illuminates this earth-shaking tale without a single word. It is as elemental as hieroglyphics, a timeless story for all ages. In Sticks and Stones, Peter Kuper has created a picture story of epic proportions. It is an intricate tale of birth and death, war and peace, artfully told without a single word. Sticks and Stones chronicles the rise of an empire and the consequences of hubris. This is a timeless allegory and a coutionary tale for our present-day world. Given that Peter Kuper’s work is usually wordless and silent, it is all the more extraordinary that he should be one of the strongest and truest radical voices to emerge from contemporary America. In Sticks and Stones, Kuper crafts a Bush-era parable so beautiful, simple, and lucid that it could be understood and enjoyed by anyone, regardless of nationality. This is a powerful, angry, and compassionate document, and in its perfectly measured silence there resides a profound human eloquence. Highly recommended. –Alan Moore, author of Watchmen and From Hell |

Watchmen $39.99 A group of super heroes plagued by all too human failings fall from grace while the concept of the super hero is dissected and inverted as strangely realistic characters are stalked by an unknown assassin. Annotation: In an alternate 1985, superheroes have existed for more than 30 years and have endured the gamut of public opinion–from acceptance to polite disdain to outright hostility. Now someone is killing the second generation of superheroes, and, as the threat of nuclear holocaust looms over a dystopic world, the killer must be found before it’s too late. Originally published in 12 separate comic books, which are collected here along with some additional material, this book is perhaps the seminal graphic novel. (This text refers to paperback edition). Praise Time A work of ruthless psychological realism, it’s a landmark in the graphic novel medium. It would be a masterpiece in any. – Lev Grossman10/24/2005 New York Times Book Review It’s tempting, and entirely possible, to appreciate WATCHMEN solely at a microscopic level, to lose oneself in Moore and Gibbons’s multilayered narrative techniques or to unpack their allusions to everything from ‘The Threepenny Opera’ to the Book of Job to Bob Dylan’s ‘Desolation Row. But the story of WATCHMEN, carefully plotted and decidedly finite, deserves equally close attention, as its acuteness has not dulled with age. – Dave Itzkoff 11/20/2005 Author Bio: Alan Moore The wild-haired and temperamental British comic-book writer Alan Moore is something of a god in the comic-book world. Moore’s stories teem with literary references, complex symbolic imagery, and complicated characters. His Watchmen series from 1986 became an instant classic of the genre; the series tackled issues of nuclear war and the Soviet Union, explored the psychological underpinnings of people’s desire to dress up as superheroes, and brought a new level of sophistication to the typically adolescent art of the s |
